Hungary Student Visa Guide

Hungary has a rich historical background, beautiful landscapes, and vibrant cultural life, and has become an increasingly popular destination for international students. The country is home to many universities that are recognised for their academic excellence and innovative research. As well as its universities, Hungary is known for its welcoming atmosphere, architectural landmarks, and thermal spas, providing a unique environment for students from abroad to pursue their higher education.

Hungary Student Visa Process and Fees for International Students

Students from outside the European Union need to obtain a student visa, known as a D type visa, to study in Hungary. The process begins once you are admitted to a Hungarian university.

To apply for a Hungarian student visa, you need to prepare and submit the following documents:

  • A valid passport and passport-sized photos.
  • A letter of acceptance from the Hungarian university confirming your enrollment in a full-time accredited programme.
  • Proof of tuition fee payment, or a scholarship letter if applicable.
  • Evidence of financial means to support yourself during your studies, typically around €7,000 per year, similar to the estimated cost of living.
  • Health insurance coverage for the duration of your stay.
  • Accommodation arrangements in Hungary, such as a dormitory placement or a rental agreement.

The application fee for a Hungarian student visa varies by country, so it is recommended to check with the Hungarian consulate or embassy in your home country for the exact amount.

It is essential to apply for your student visa well in advance of your intended travel date to Hungary, as processing times can vary based on the consulate’s workload and your country of residence.

Upon arrival in Hungary, students may need to apply for a residence permit within 30 days if their stay exceeds 90 days. This process is typically facilitated by the university and involves a separate fee.

Hungary Student Visa Work Regulations

Hungary allows international students to work part-time while studying. With a valid student visa or residence permit, students can work up to 24 hours per week during term time and full-time during holiday periods.

This provision enables students to gain work experience, improve their language skills, and manage their living expenses more effectively. Upon completing their studies, graduates can apply for a “job-searching visa” or “stay-back option,” which permits them to remain in Hungary for an additional nine months to seek employment or start a business, offering a pathway to further opportunities within Hungary and the broader European Union.
