Latvia Student Visa Guide

Latvia, with its rich cultural tapestry, historic cities, and stunning natural landscapes, is becoming a choice destination for international students. The country’s universities are recognised for their quality education, particularly in areas such as engineering, medicine, and business studies. Beyond its academic merits, Latvia is known for its welcoming atmosphere, vibrant student life, and relatively low cost of living, making it an ideal place for students seeking a unique European education experience.

Latvia Student Visa Process and Fees for International Students

Non-EU/EEA students wishing to study in Latvia for a period longer than 90 days need to apply for a long-term visa (D visa) or a temporary residence permit, depending on the length of their study program. The process begins with securing admission to a Latvian university. Once you have your acceptance letter, you will need to demonstrate that you have sufficient financial means to support yourself during your stay in Latvia. Students are generally required to show they have access to at least €6,000 per year to cover living expenses.

To apply for a Latvian student visa, you need to submit the application at the nearest Latvian embassy or consulate in your home country, providing the following documents:

  • A letter of acceptance from the Latvian university confirming your enrollment in a full-time course
  • Proof of sufficient financial means to cover your tuition fees and living expenses for the duration of your stay
  • A valid health insurance policy
  • A valid passport and recent passport-sized photographs
  • A police clearance certificate to prove you have no criminal record

The visa application fee for a long-term D visa is around €60, while the fee for a temporary residence permit application is approximately €100. It’s important to apply well in advance of your intended start date, as visa processing times can vary.

Upon arrival in Latvia, students with a D visa planning to stay for more than 90 days must apply for a temporary residence permit at the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs (OCMA) in Latvia.

Latvia Student Visa Work Regulations

Latvia offers international students the possibility to work part-time during their studies. Students with a valid residence permit are allowed to work up to 20 hours per week. This enables students to gain practical experience, enhance their language skills, and support themselves financially during their studies.

After completing their studies, graduates can apply for a temporary residence permit extension to look for employment or start a business in Latvia, providing a seamless transition from student life to professional engagement within the country.
