About Social Services (Eve) HNC (SCQF level 7), HNC - at City of Glasgow College

This course is for individuals interested in a career in the social care field or those wishing to pursue further study, for example, to the Degree in Social Work.

It is also suitable for individuals who are employed in the care field and require qualifications for registration with the Scottish Social Services Council and/or continual professional development.

The main aim of the HNC is to provide an integrated course of values, skills and knowledge to equip candidates to work effectively in a range of care settings.  The specific aims of the course are to enable you to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the values which underpin work in social care settings.
  • Understand how the National Care Standards and SSSC Codes of Practice should inform practice.
  • Integrate values, skills and knowledge effectively in a variety of social care settings.
  • Develop skills appropriate for working with a range of service users in social care settings.
  • Prepare for employment in a care setting, or to develop the skills of existing social care workers.
  • Critically evaluate practice and to be reflective practitioners.
  • Develop a working knowledge of current legislation, policy, procedures and practice methods.
  • Engage in continuing professional development.
  • To facilitate progression (for those who wish) to higher education.
  • It is also to provide an award which is flexible enough to meet the needs of employers, hence the inclusion of three mandatory SVQ3 Units.

You'll be taught by qualified lecturing staff from a variety of health and social care backgrounds. The structure of the course includes lectures, research tasks, presentations and group discussions.

This is an interactive course which includes blended learning and encourages your active participation. Industry experts will also be invited to speak with student groups and there is a yearly Graduate Panel for previous students to share their experiences with those currently studying.

HNC Social Services part-time students will complete one day per week on placement from early in the course to the completion of studies within a social care setting allowing for the opportunity to gain experience working directly with service users, put theory into practice in a care setting and complete the SVQ3 units.

Please Note:
  • The cost shown is for year one of the course only.
  • You'll be required to attend college on a Tuesday and Thursday evening from 6pm-9pm for two academic years.
