Construction pathway
Building Technologists play an important role in the construction process as their ability to combine technical expertise, knowledge of building law and managerial know-how is crucial if buildings are to be constructed to a specified quality and on budget. During your study, you will learn how to collaborate with a team of professionals to plan the measurement, cost and production requirements of buildings within a framework of commercial and construction management, contract and health and safety law. Some of the teaching is through project briefs and tasks that simulate the type of work you would be doing in industry.
We welcome students from a variety of academic or professional backgrounds and we don’t expect you to have prior knowledge of construction, law or management. The course has a very high standing both academically and professionally and leads to admission into several professional bodies.
Building Surveying pathway
Traditionally, a Building Surveyor’s main area of expertise has been in property refurbishment and conservation, but nowadays they are also involved in building design, management, maintenance, and surveys – the whole lifecycle of a building, in fact.
This course is an introduction to working in the construction and property sector and provides you with the solid grounding in construction, management and law that you will need as a building surveying technician working in collaboration with a building surveyor. The course assumes no prior knowledge of the subjects studied and is open to students from a wide range of academic and professional backgrounds.
Real Estate Management pathway
The HNC in Real Estate Management provides a solid grounding in the valuation and management of urban land and buildings, leading to qualification as a General Practice Surveying Technician. You don’t need any prior knowledge of construction, law or management, as the course introduces you to these areas and you will be able to get a feel for purchasing, letting, management and sales by working on projects that simulate the real world of property management.
By the end of the course you will have the technical and personal skills required of a professional technician working with a General Practitioner Surveyor in the property management sector, but you will also have developed a number of transferable skills such as report-writing and teamwork that can be applied to a wide variety of careers.
The fees quoted are those for the 2018/19 year as information for 2019/20 is not yet available.
