About this course

Our Hydrogeology and Water Management MSc focusses on groundwater and hydrogeology. You’ll be provided with the opportunity to understand water and its:

  • nature
  • occurrence
  • characterisation
  • management.

You’ll receive practical and theoretical training relevant to the needs of the water and environmental engineering industries.

What you'll learn

You will gain skills and knowledge related to key areas of hydrogeology and water management, including:

  • hydrogeology
  • hydrogeochemistry
  • hydraulics of porous media.

You’ll also gain advanced knowledge and understanding of:

  • components of groundwater assessment and instrumentation
  • hydrostratigraphy
  • contaminant hydrology
  • analysis and modelling methods
  • socio-economic aspects of groundwater.

Your development

On completion of the course, you will have developed intellectual and practical skills relevant to industry including:

  • apply appropriate mathematical methods for modelling and analysing relevant problems
  • use scientific principles to develop mathematical and environmental solutions to practical problems
  • create new products or methodologies by combining ideas from a wide range of sources
  • planning, executing and reporting research projects
  • designing water infrastructure schemes
  • use of instrumentation, IT tools and hydroinformatic technologies.

Delivery

You will be required to earn a total of 180 credits throughout the course, including 120 credits in semesters 1 and 2 with 60 credits as part of a dissertation project in the third semester. You will be taught through a combination of:

  • lectures
  • tutorials
  • practical classes
  • coursework 
  • site visits.

During the first two semesters, you will focus on enhancing your knowledge of the water environment and infrastructure through both compulsory and optional modules.

Accreditation

The course is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) (comprising ICE, IStructE, CIHT and IHIE), as meeting the requirements for Further Learning for a Chartered Engineer (CEng) for students with an Accredited CEng (Partial) BEng Honours degree or Accredited IEng (Full) BEng/BSc Honours degree.

The course is also accredited by the Geological Society, Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM) and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).

Facilities

The School of Engineering has an exceptional range of laboratories equipped with a wide range of analytical instrumentation supporting our research, teaching and contract research projects. These include:

  • Novak Hydraulics and Hydrology Laboratory
  • Numerous field sites including Cockle Park (borehole array) and many catchment study sites
  • Chemical and Biological Research Laboratories
  • Geotechnics, Soils and Structures Research Laboratories.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

Entry requirements

A good 2:2 honours degree, or international equivalent, in subjects such as:

  • engineering
  • geography
  • environmental sciences
  • earth sciences
  • mathematics
  • physics
  • geology
  • chemistry
  • computer sciences
  • geomatics.

Applicants with different or non-standard qualifications will be considered on an individual basis, particularly if you have relevant industrial experience.

International Students

To study this course you need to meet our Band 6 English Language requirements:

Direct Entry: IELTS 6.5 overall (with a minimum of 6.0 in all sub-skills)

If you have lower English Language scores, you may be accepted onto a pre-sessional English course. 

Our typical English Language requirements are listed as IELTS scores but we also accept a wide range of English Language tests.

Pre-sessional English Course Requirements

  • 6 week Pre-sessional entry: IELTS 6.0 overall (with 6.0 in writing and a minimum of 5.5 in all other sub-skills)    
  • 10 week Pre-sessional entry: IELTS 6.0 overall (with 1 sub-skill at a minimum of 5.0 and 3 sub-skills at a minimum of 5.5, including writing)
