About Horse Management, BTEC - at Nottingham Trent University (NTU)

This course will link theoretical equine science to the practical context of riding and stable management, equipping you with the knowledge required for a career in the equine industry. You’ll also gain considerable practical riding experience on the flat and over jumps whilst studying towards the equine industry’s recognised British Horse Society (BHS) examinations.

Modules cover areas such as:

  • Horse Rehabilitation and Therapy

Develop an understanding of common sites and types of performance injuries alongside their causes and effects, relating them to different disciplines. You will also investigate a wide range of rehabilitation techniques and identify laws and regulations relating to the field.

  • Caring for Competition Horses

Gain a knowledge of caring for a horse at an event and an insight into the rules, regulations and etiquette governing the various disciplines. The module will cover pre and post-competition care for the horse and consider the immediate and longer-term measurements of the horse and the importance of aftercare including exercise, transport, tack, clothing and equipment.

  • Riding on the Flat and Over Fences

You will be taught the principles of riding and exercising horses and how these can be applied in practice. You’ll have the opportunity to ride a wide variety of horses of all ages and levels of training both on the flat and over
fences. You will also be able to take part in internal competitions run by the Equestrian Centre.

  • Equestrian Teaching

This unit focuses on developing and enhancing your coaching skills with practical and theory sessions in line with UKCC Level Two. You will learn how to deliver lead rein and lunge lessons as well as group sessions on the flat and over fences.

  • Horse Behaviour and Welfare

Compare traditional and natural lifestyles and analyse the associated effects of domestication, including stereotypical behaviours. You will also gain an understanding of horse welfare which will be enhanced by visits to equine rescue centres and guest speakers.

How will I learn?

You’ll learn through a variety of engaging and informative methods such as lectures, tutorials and practical sessions. Your tutorials will be taken in small groups and led by a tutor, whereas your practicals will take place in the riding school on campus. You’ll also benefit from guest speakers from within the equine industry and external visits.

How will I be assessed?

You’ll be assessed through a variety of methods including assignments, practical assessments, reports and presentations. You’ll also have the opportunity to take the British Horse Society (BHS) Progressive Riding Tests Stages 1-6 and the Riding and Road Safety exam in Year One and work towards BHS Stage 2 or higher in your second year.

What’s next?
