About MA Psychotherapy & Counselling, MA - at Regent's University London

The MA in Psychotherapy & Counselling provides an intermediate pre-professional training, and includes taught, clinical, experiential and self-directed components.

Upon completion you will be able to go on to the final stage of training that leads to eligibility for UKCP membership as an integrative or existential psychotherapist.

Key skills, aims and objectives

Gain eligibility for professional training at advanced diploma level
Acquire a broad knowledge of theories of psychotherapy, and the work of key historical and contemporary figures
Prepare for psychotherapy practice by learning skills in the safe environment of the classroom
Apply theoretical knowledge and acquired skills in an approved clinical placement under the supervision of experienced practitioners in both the placement and the University
Demonstrate a capacity for self-insight gained through personal therapy, and for ongoing self-evaluation and reflection on personal beliefs and prejudices that may affect clinical practice
Gain knowledge of research methods and carry out an in-depth ethical investigation into a relevant topic
Start to develop an individual approach to the practice of psychotherapy and counselling

Future opportunities

Upon completion of the programme you are eligible to progress to one of our Advanced Diploma courses (in integrative or existential psychotherapy), which is the final stage of training that leads to eligibility for UKCP membership.

Entry requirements

For entry to the MA we require a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in any discipline* as well as a Certificate in Psychotherapy & Counselling of a minimum of 120 hours**. We also require at least six months’ professional experience in an allied area (such as nursing, social work, teaching, human resources or mediation) or in a voluntary capacity seeing individuals in a helping or supportive context (such as befriending, mentoring or telephone helpline counselling). Applicants are required to have sufficient maturity and life experience to be capable of undertaking clinical training. Experience of personal therapy is desirable, but not required. Please note: applicants will be expected to attend an interview before an unconditional offer can be made. *If you have not completed an undergraduate degree you are required to have at least two years’ experience of working professionally in an allied area or in a voluntary capacity seeing individuals in a helping or supportive context. **It is desirable to have completed RUL’s Certificate in Psychotherapy & Counselling. For those applicants whose mother tongue is not English, we also require evidence of English language proficiency. Please refer to our website for further details.
