Costume Production looks at the technical elements of costume realisation; taught through practical projects and hands-on experience in Centrals public production programmes, you will develop highly advanced technical skills to prepare you for the costume industry; this ranges from pattern cutting, garment construction and costume supervision and management for live & screen performances.
The programme covers both historical and contemporary costume and accessories but also focuses on the use of more sustainable materials and costume production methods. Throughout, you will be encouraged to explore your own ideas and pathways within the field of costume production.
From the first year of the programme, you will learn how to collaborate with the wider creative team, working closely with designers, performers and the stage management department. There are opportunities to undertake costume supervision and costume management projects both in-house and through professional placement. You will engage practically in considerations of representation, designing for diverse body shapes and types, and developing this inclusive practice to shape and challenge the industries you will work in.
Connections to the costume industry and work experience will enable you to gain an understanding of the broader costume production roles and knowledge to support your chosen career trajectory.
