About Mechanical Engineering, BEng (Hons) - at Sheffield Hallam University
Mechanical engineering is a wide and diverse area of engineering disciplines and affects many aspects of our everyday lives.
It involves * designing * developing * installing * operating * maintaining almost all objects with movable parts. Most man-made items involve mechanical engineering skills at some stage during development or manufacture.
This course produces high quality graduate mechanical engineers with specialist academic knowledge and complementary professional and personal skills. These skills allow graduates to work in industry or research and development.
You develop your intellectual skills to analyse and solve mechanical engineering problems, and to design creative and innovative products and devices, using modern technology. We also introduce you to the business and economic world in which commercial engineering enterprises work.
We encourage you to take the four year route and spend your third year in industry on paid work placement. Mature students with previous relevant work experience, and international students, normally take the three year route.
Special facilitiesYou have access to a wide range of hardware and equipment. This includes computer-aided design (CAD) software such as ProEngineer, and analysis software such as Fluent, Abacus and Matlab.
We also have specialist facilities including
* rapid prototyping equipment to create accurate prototypes of product designs from CAD-generated information
* a robotics laboratory to study computer-controlled manufacturing equipment
* an automotive workshop for engine testing
SHU Racing and Formula Studenthttp://www.shu.ac.uk/shuracing/Formula Student is an international competition that challenges engineering students to design, build and race a single seat racing car. Students from almost every engineering and technology course make up our SHU Racing team.
If you have an interest in automotive engineering and motor racing you can apply for membership of SHU Racing. Numbers are limited to students with the potential to benefit from the experience, and the ability to produce work of a high quality.
SHU Racing develops your personal and technical skills. It gives you valuable business experience as the outcome relies on the performance of every team member.
You work on every part of the project including * design * manufacture * business * liaising with sponsors. This experience increases your value to all types of engineering companies when you graduate.
You may get the chance to drive the current car by taking it to local track events and hill climbs.
The year's high point is the Formula Student competition, which takes place in July. This involves presenting the technical design and business plan for your car to motor racing experts and competing your car against other UK and world universities.
