About Working with Children, Young People and Families - Foundation degree, Foundation Degree - at Sheffield Hallam University

Foundation degrees are vocational qualifications designed in partnership with employers. This course enables you to work with children, families and young people in a supportive role. It covers all aspects of the Common Core for the Children's Workforcehttp://www.childrensworkforce.org.uk/workstreams/pathways-for-progression/common-core-refresh and Every Child Mattershttp://www.dcsf.gov.uk/everychildmatters/ government agendas. You study areas such as * effective communication * children's development and behaviour * multi-agency working and information sharing * children's health, safety, wellbeing and safeguarding * children's life transitions. We normally base teaching in our modern, £13 million, purpose-built Robert Winston Building on the Collegiate Crescent Campushttp://www.shu.ac.uk/visit/plancollegiate.html. You spend half the course on placement in a range of agencies including children's centres, schools, nurseries and organisations such as Sure Start, and Family Action. Placements allow you to learn from skilled professionals and put into practice the skills you develop on the course. You study some interprofessional education modules alongside students from other health disciplines, such as nurses, radiographers and paramedics. This shared learning experience allows you to develop teamworking and understand the contribution different professionals make. After completing this course you can take a further year of study to gain an honours degree. This course has a common first year with the BA (Honours) Youth and Community Workhttp://prospectus.shu.ac.uk/op_uglookup1.cfm?id_num=491 so you may be able to change direction. Open daysWe run regular open days for prospective students and parents. Come and talk to staff and students and help yourself make an informed choice. Find out more by calling us on 0114 225 5555 or see our open dayhttp://www.shu.ac.uk/study/open/ website.
