About Aerospace Engineering, MEng - at Sheffield Hallam University

This course is for people wanting a career at the highest level of engineering. It gives you the skills and knowledge to work in product development or senior management within the aerospace industries. The extra year of study you complete to achieve an MEng provides you with a broader and deeper understanding of aerospace engineering. This makes you very attractive to employers. The knowledge and core skills you gain are not specific to the aerospace industries. They also apply to the wider mechanical engineering industry, increasing your employment opportunities. The first year builds a foundation of mathematics, engineering principles, underpinning knowledge and fundamental skills. The basic principles of flight, aircraft design and control are introduced, and you cover engineering practice and personal skills development. The second year starts to apply core mechanical engineering principles, analysis and design to airframe structures, propulsion systems, flight control and instrumentation. We introduce you to the specialist engineering materials used in airframe and engine construction. You also study business and management to broaden your knowledge of the commercial aspects of the engineering industry, and further develop your mathematics and computer modelling skills. In year three you can take an optional one year work placement. You are able to apply the knowledge gained on the course to commercial engineering practice, gain new skills and learn how industry works. In the third year of study, you continue to develop your understanding of the core aerospace themes of aircraft design and manufacture, flight aerodynamics and control and propulsion systems. You are also introduced to the elements of astronautics, such as considering an aircraft jet engine design in detail. The final year of the course has the most challenging modules. These are at the forefront of our understanding of engineering systems analysis and design, and are designed to stretch your abilities to create new, innovative and exciting solutions to engineering problems. Final year option modules also allow you to study areas of interest, which include business-related modules to enhance your management potential. The culmination of your final year is a major multidisciplinary group project completed in an international context.Final year option modules allow you to study areas of interest, which include business-related modules to enhance your management potential.
