About Computer Science (Networks and Distributed Systems), MSc, Graduate Diploma - at Trinity College Dublin

While most traditional computer applications were designed to run on a single computer operating in isolation, more and more applications are being designed to run on networks of cooperating computers. The emergence of the global Internet, new technologies for high bandwidth and wireless data communications, and the availability of ever cheaper and more powerful computers is enabling a new generation of distributed applications to be built. In the future, such applications will pervade industrial, commercial, and, indeed, personal life as the integration of computer technology and digital communications continues.

In fact, the widespread deployment of autonomous computers working cooperatively over data communications networks promises to be the most significant development since the introduction of the personal computer. These systems will bring about major changes in industry, commerce, education, leisure, and government. The increasing use of the Internet and the World Wide Web in all walks of life and of Intranets in business is evidence of this trend.
