About Mathematics Education, MA - at University College London (UCL)

Why an MA in Mathematics Education?

Subject knowledge is at the base of all good teaching. This MA is for educators who want to make sense of their experiences in mathematics classrooms by drawing on knowledge structures about mathematics education and about education more generally. You will be introduced to the foundations of mathematics education as a research field and see how it has contributed to understanding practice in areas such as digital technologies, language, curriculum development, collaborative learning, social justice as well as particular mathematical topics. A subject-specific MA helps teachers take on new departmental responsibilities, and fuels their sense of enjoyment and purpose in teaching mathematics. By keeping in touch with the mathematics teaching community beyond their own institutions, educators can contribute to wider pedagogic and policy agendas. Assignments in the MA Mathematics Education are tailored to mathematics-focussed graduates, with support for those who have less experience of essay-writing.

This masters degree will:

  • develop your understanding of a range of areas of research and practice in the teaching and learning of mathematics
  • give you some opportunity to engage further with mathematics that is relevant to your phase of teaching, with the main focus on mathematics education rather than mathematics itself.

"Fantastic, very thought provoking and stimulating. It's also inspired and enlivened my teaching..." (MA Mathematics Education student)
