About Advanced Engineering Management: Operations Management, MSc - at University of Birmingham

This degree is aimed at holders of at least an upper second-class Honours degree in engineering or similar interested in studying the management and control of operations from a technical standpoint. You might be just finishing your first degree, or perhaps already in your first role and looking to advance your career. You will learn to how to analyse various systems, practices and procedures employed in the management of operations, design such systems from new, evaluate and report on their effectiveness and appropriateness and assess real organisations from a practical operations management perspective. On completion, you will be skilled to work in positions in factory, logistics or general management within the industrial, commercial or service sectors.

In semester 1 key management concepts will be taught by leading academics from Birmingham Business School, including topics such as strategy, innovation, marketing, organisational behaviour and financial management. In semester 2 these key management concepts will be complemented by the exploration of practical management applications in the field of Operations Management by academics from the School of Engineering, drawing upon its wealth of research experience and industrial links. This new structure will allow us to present the core principles in semester 1 and then to demonstrate their application in semester 2 before you progress into the summer and the opportunity to investigate and develop a contemporary Operations Management topic via a 60 credit research project. You can expect to be exposed throughout to up-to-date knowledge of current and future trends in the management of your chosen field whilst developing the skills of critical evaluation and analysis that you will need as an Engineer of tomorrow.
