About Preparatory course for classical instrument and voice studies, Foundation - at University of Debrecen

The objective of this preparatory course is to prepare foreign students for the requirements of entry tests to Hungarian institutions of music of higher education. Besides systematizing their already acquired music knowledge and experience, they can improve their musical skills and theoretical knowledge. Thus, they can get apt to follow studies in higher education.

Entry requirements

Written test:

- notation of an 8-bar one-part melody, which contains varied melodical and rhythmic elements

- notation of a two-part Viennese classical quotation with functional bass ( the tune may contain simple alterations and/or modulation, candidates are supposed to be familiar with periods and binary and ternary forms)

- notation of a two-part interval procession in tonal frames without rhythm, with maximum tonal deviation of a perfect 5th (candidates must recognise intervals, must sing them with pitch names in both dierctions)

- recognition and notation of harmonies (on a given note, major, minor, augmented, diminished basic triads, inversions of sixths and six-four chords)

Oral exam:

- sight-reading of an 8-10-bar one-part Viennese classical melody ( the tune may contain simple alterations and/or modulation, candidates are supposed to be familiar with periods and binary and ternary forms)

- singing and formal and tonal analysis of 10 Hungarian folk songs

- Candidates must recognise by ear major, minor (natural, harmonic and melodic), pentatonic and modal modes, must be able to sing them with solmization and pitch names, possibly up to 7# and 7 b.

- Candidates must recognise by ear major, minor, augmented, diminished basic triads, inversions of sixths and six-four chords

Compulsory piano

- There is no entrance exam for students of string, wind , precussion instruments or voice, but they are required to have piano skills corresponding to the 2nd and 3rd classes of music schools (2 years of previous piano studies)

- For Organ students the requirement is piano skills corresponding to the 5th-6th class of music schools (5 or 6 years of previous piano studies) (for furter entry materials see the requirements for Organ First Study)
