Study
This is a broad-ranging programme that combines the study of cultural theory, literature, film, history and international relations. Studying this MA degree allows you to explore the events and forces that shape the United States, gaining a deeper understanding of how this powerful nation influences our cultural, political, and economic lives.
Structure
Assessment is on the basis of coursework (essays and class presentations) and a dissertation (half the marks of the course) where each student receives intensive one-on-one supervision and mentoring from an academic that is linked to their area of research. A vibrant research community ensures that faculty and graduate students meet regularly for research seminars and social events. The Arthur Miller Centre organises an annual Literary Festival, bringing major North American writers to the campus.
Teaching
Teaching is in small seminar groups, which provides students with the opportunity to engage fully with their own ideas and those of others, including distinguished scholars from the UK, USA and elsewhere who present their research for discussion with this MA community. Postgraduate students are encouraged to present their work in this supportive environment, where they can critically engage in academic debates.
Employability
Many transferable skills are developed through the MA programme in American Studies including: research and writing skills; ITC skills; presentational skills; practice in public speaking and academic debate; team-work; time and project management. In addition, the connections and opportunities to network you have in the lively research community are invaluable to a career in this area.
Open to applicants with a good Honours degree (UK BA (Hons) 2:1 or equivalent) in humanities or social science subjects. Special entry requirements include the submission of an essay from your previous degree accompanying your application. Please visit UEA's website for complete details.
