About Literary Translation (Part time), MA - at University of East Anglia (UEA)

Study

The MA in Literary Translation combines translation practice with translation theory and also looks at links between the two. Few other taught courses in Literary Translation in the UK combine practical work with a strong emphasis on stylistic and cultural issues. Students may work with any languages, as long as it includes English. Near-bilingual language competence is assumed for applicants.

Structure

Workshops are on varied topics including translation editing, with a member of the Translators Association advising on how to approach a publisher. Students have the opportunity to join the editing team for UEA's journal Norwich Papers. Students work on a dissertation with supervisor support.

Teaching

This MA in Literary Translation is based in the School of Literature, Drama and Creative Writing at UEA, with teachers and researchers in English and World Literature, (including French, German, Indian) Literary Translation, Literary Theory and Creative Writing. The School has a reputation for excellence in teaching and research, highly-ranked in the National Students' Survey. Students benefit from exposure to an annual programme of readings, visits and residencies by writers and translators.

Employability

This MA provides an academic qualification for professional translators and is a basis for further research if performance is good. Many of our MA students go on to become practising or freelance translators, teach translation, or work in areas related to translation, such as publishing or the media.

Entry requirements

Open to applicants with a good Honours degree - UK BA (Hons) 2:1 or equivalent. Applicants must submit a sample of academic writing, (essay from undergraduate degree) for assessment. Near bilingual language competence is assumed. Please visit UEA's website for complete details.
