About Writing the Modern World (Part time), MA - at University of East Anglia (UEA)

Study

Writing in the Modern World is devoted to the critical and creative study of 20th and 21st century literature. Writing is understood as what we read and what we make; exploring the interrelation of the two activities is central to this MA. As a student on Writing the Modern World you will both reflect on and participate in this on-going dynamic of thinking, reading and writing about modern and contemporary literature.

Structure

At the core of this degree are two innovative modules: Living Modernism and Creative-Critical Writing. Theory in both of these modules is treated as an interactive component of the 20th and 21st century literary tradition. Two further modules are selected from a variety of specialist options, including ones from related MA programmes. The programme concludes with a dissertation, where students work one-to-one with a tutor on a topic of their own choosing.

Teaching

As well as being taught by prize-winning scholars and authors, you will also encounter the foremost figures in contemporary writing via the UEA Literary Festival. As a postgraduate student in the School of Literature, Drama and Creative Writing you'll be part of a vibrant mix of MA and PhD students who are engaged in writing the modern world in a variety of ways: from producing critical studies of novels, poetry or plays through to writing their own.

Employability

Many students have used their course dissertation as a testing ground for further study at PhD-level. You will be prepared for pursuing doctoral research, but also equipped with transferable skills in research, project management and critical thinking that you are needed to pursue a career outside academia.

Entry requirements

Open to applicants with a good Honours degree - UK BA (Hons) 2:1 or equivalent. Applicants must submit a sample of academic writing (essay from undergraduate degree) for assessment. Please visit UEA's website for complete details.
