About Civil Engineering with Architecture, BEng (Hons) - at University of Glasgow

In addition to studying civil engineering, this degree programme provides an appreciation of architectural principles and an understanding of both the architect’s role in construction and the interaction between architect and civil engineer.

What will I study?

This programme, which does not lead to a professional qualification in architecture, is similar to the Civil Engineering programme in style, content and structure. However, a significant part of it: around 20%; is devoted to architecture. In the first year, architecture replaces the subjects of geology and environmental impact assessment in the Civil Engineering programme (everything else being retained) and in subsequent years it is mainly the transportation courses and some civil engineering design studies which are omitted to permit the study of architecture. In fourth and fifth years, elective courses provide advanced level knowledge within a range of civil engineering and architecture specialisations.

The main route to becoming a fully chartered civil engineer is through the MEng degree which usually takes five years. The BEng degree remains popular and can be completed normally in four years. The route to becoming a fully chartered engineer with a BEng degree will also require some further study after graduation which can be done part-time from work.

How will I learn?

You will learn through a balance of individual and team working, theoretical and practical approaches, and consideration of design and construction. Considerable emphasis is placed upon practical work, in the form of laboratory classes, physical and computational modelling exercises, project work, surveying fieldwork, design projects and site visits.

Special feature

The architectural component is entirely design-oriented, studio-based and directed towards the production of sketches, drawings and models and their compilation into an annual portfolio. This component of the programme is taught at the Mackintosh School of Architecture, the Glasgow School of Art.

Note

The MEng and BEng degree programmes have been accredited by the Institutions of Civil and Structural Engineers. Such accreditation satisfies the academic requirement for progression to full professional qualification as a chartered engineer.
