About Community Development, BA (Hons) - at University of Glasgow

This work-based degree programme is for people with substantial, current practice working in the community in either a paid or unpaid capacity. It leads to the Professional Qualification endorsed by the Standards Council for CLD in Scotland.

What will I study?

Formal teaching takes place a day and a half per week between October and May in the first two years and a day a week between October and May in the third year. In the third year you will also be expected to undertake a work placement out with your normal workplace.

In the first year you will study:
  • Transformational practice

  • Community development and social action

  • Local and global contexts

  • Social theories I

  • Practice methodologies.

In the second year you will study:
  • Lifelong learning and social change

  • Empowerment strategies and practice models

  • Popular education practice

  • Organisation, planning and evaluation

  • Social theories II

  • Critical practice.

In the third year you will study:
  • Social theories III

  • Research methods

  • Research project

  • Practice placement. This final placement may be an opportunity to experience work overseas or within a different environment.

How will I learn?

Teaching is delivered through a combination of lectures, work in groups and popular education methods. As this is a work-based learning programme, in addition to formal learning you will draw from your own practice in the community.
