Programme Aims and Features

The Bachelor of Pharmacy (BPharm) programme aims to produce competent graduates with solid knowledge of pharmacy as well as abilities to apply the core knowledge and skills for effective, humane and ethical delivery of pharmaceutical care. They will contribute both to the profession of pharmacy and to the overall health of the patient body by adopting the highest standard of professional practice.

Programme Features:

Clinical Pharmacy: With the support of Queen Mary Hospital, students studying at HKU enjoy early clinical exposure and also benefit from the inter-professional collaboration of pharmacists and clinicians through teaching in wards and outpatient clinics.
Community-based Training: Students are adequately prepared to provide expert service at the community level. The biggest community pharmacy chain stores in Hong Kong are committed to train more quality pharmacists for the community and they provide placement openings for students of the programme.
Exposure to Chinese Medicine as well as Complementary and Alternative Medicine: The programme equips future pharmacists who practice in Hong Kong with the knowledge of Chinese Medicine as well as Complementary and Alternative Medicines [CAM]. These include herbal medicines, nutraceuticals, health care products, cosmetics, etc, which are commonly used by many patients in conjunction with Western medicines.
Patient Counseling and Communication Skills: A key characteristic of the programme is to enhance students’ proficiency in providing primary health care services, including patient education. Students have various opportunities to acquire patient counseling and communication skills step-by-step with a gradual increase in the degree of mastery and in the complexity of the situations encountered.
Training in Industrial Pharmacy: Students of the programme have the opportunity to experience this subspecialty to realize the increasing demand of the local industry for professional pharmacy service. A wide spectrum of topics on the practical aspects related to industrial pharmacy is taught by experts with extensive work experience in the industry.

Professional Recognition

The programme has been granted accreditation by the Pharmacy and Poisons Board of Hong Kong. Students who have completed a full-time pharmacy degree and one additional year of internship are qualified as registered pharmacists in Hong Kong.

You (or your parents) only need to pay a fraction of the cost of education in Hong Kong, even though our educational standards are at an international level. We value what you bring to HKU, in terms of your background and culture, and our fees are set at a level that students everywhere can afford, as long as your academic results are good enough!

Entry requirements

If you take the International Baccalaureate Diploma, GCE A-level/International A-Level, SAT/AP or All India Senior School Certificate Examination and Indian School Certificate, please take note of the standards as below:

International Baccalaureate Diploma - 37, candidates should have completed the full IB Diploma, including CAS, TOK, and the Extended Essay.
GCE A-Level/International A-Level - 1A* and 2A's, candidates should present at minimum of 3 A-level subjects, excluding English and Chinese language.
SAT Reasoning Test/ACT plus Writing and SAT Subject Test/Advanced Placement Test - Redesigned SAT: 1350, SAT Subject Tests: 650 in each of the 3 subjects, AP Exams: Level 3 in each of the 3 subjects
All India Senior School Certificate Examination and Indian School Certificate - 93%, Candidates should present a minimum of 5 subjects in the Grade 12 Indian Board examinations.
