Manufacturing is concerned with the effective use of technology, management and their integration to achieve added value and superior performance. The modern concept of manufacturing stretches from product design, manufacturing planning and processing, to supply chain and end-of-life considerations. To achieve world-class manufacturing performance it is essential to have an understanding of the holistic view of manufacturing systems as well as key components of the manufacturing process chain. This advanced one-year programme is designed to provide the necessary depth and breadth of knowledge for modern manufacturing engineers and executives.
The aims of the MSc (Eng) programme in Advanced Manufacturing Systems and Technology are firstly to provide a bridge between University and Industry for new graduates wishing to transfer smoothly and effectively to a career in the manufacturing sector of industry. Secondly, to provide an opportunity for those engaged in industry to renew and update their knowledge on the state-of-the-art developments in manufacturing systems and technology.
The programme has been running for 20 years and is constantly being upgraded to reflect the latest in technology, management tools and methodologies.
The introduction of CDIO (Conceive-Design-Implement-Operate) principles into the programme will further enrich the learning experience. This programme is fully accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.
This 12-month programme consists of compulsory and optional taught modules over two semesters and a major project starting in semester 2 and continuing through the summer.
ProjectsProject work contributes 60 credits, which will be based on a topic of industrial or scientific relevance, and will be carried out in laboratories in the University or at an approved placement in industry. The project is examined by dissertation, and award of the MSc(Eng) degree will require evidence of in-depth understanding, mastery of research techniques, ability to analyse assembled data, and assessment of outcomes.
