About Animal Nutrition, MSc - at University of Nottingham

This practical course combines the science of animal nutrition with business and operational skills. The wide range of modules enable you to study farm, companion and zoo animals. You'll gain industry knowledge through a series of case studies, guest lectures and site visits.

You'll develop your scientific knowledge and use our specialist labs to apply this in practice. Field trips to industry and Twycross Zoo help to put your learning into context through real life examples.

Teaching is based at Sutton Bonington Campus which has a 450 hectare farm. The farm has over 300 robotically milked dairy cows and a sheep flock. It is commercially run producing over 2 million litres of milk a year. The Centre for Dairy Science Innovation is also on-campus. These facilities offer the latest research technologies. This means that you'll learn from academics working on internationally renowned research.

Modules

  • On the masters degree you will complete a research project supported by a subject specialist. You'll study the research process, and learn techniques in animal and laboratory research.
  • Other core modules cover ruminant and non-ruminant nutrition. You'll consider the implications of nutrition on feed efficiency, fertility and health.
  • You'll cover nutrition from the molecular level through to the whole animal production system. You'll examine the effects of nutrients on cellular signaling processes and gene expression.
  • Studying the feed industry business, you'll get a detailed understanding of feed manufacturing. You'll use this to evaluate diet and formulation for farmed livestock, companion and zoo animals.
