About Research Methods (Health Studies), MA - at University of Nottingham

Our MA Research Methods (Health Pathway) will equip students with the in-depth skills required to carry out research in healthcare. The emphasis throughout is upon linking theoretical and methodological understandings with practical experience of research design and implementation.

Working in a highly stimulating environment, students will learn a variety of methodological approaches and research techniques and develop their ability to critique evidence required for making informed policy decision and clinical recommendations.

It will be of particular interest to those working within healthcare, will prepare students for doctoral-level studies (eg. PhD); which in turn will open up research career opportunities in the health service or academia, leading to future clinical academic or advanced clinical leadership roles.

The MA Research Methods (Health Pathway) is part of The University of Nottingham's Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Doctoral Training Centre (DTC), established as part of the new Postgraduate Training Framework introduced by the ESRC, which created 21 DTCs across the UK. Nottingham is one of just 12 DTCs which has gained recognition in its own right, rather than as part of a consortium. The Nottingham DTC will therefore play a key role in a national network, training the next generation of researchers.

The School's other research and knowledge transfer achievements since 2007 include:

  • The award of almost £5m in research funding from external sources such as the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), The ESRC, the Leverhulme Trust and the Big Lottery Fund
  • Being selected as one of seven University schools in England awarded fully-funded places on our MA Research Methods by the NIHR as part of its Clinical Academic Careers in Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professions initiative
  • Increasing the number of postgraduate research students
