About Rheumatology, PhD - at University of Nottingham

The main research interest is in osteoarthritis (OA) and crystal-associated arthritis. Principal types of study undertaken are: community-based epidemiological and genetic studies for associations, risk factors and outcomes for OA; gene-environmental interaction studies on knee and hip OA; laboratory investigation of angiogenesis and neurovascular factors involved in arthritis; and meta-analyses and evidence-based recommendations on diagnosis and management of OA and crystal arthritis. We have dedicated office space and shared-user laboratory facilities in the Clinical Sciences Building on the City Hospital campus; several large well-characterised cohorts of community participants with large joint OA and non-OA controls; and expanding repositories of sera, DNA and human knee tissue. Planned work in the coming two years includes: genome wide-scans of cohorts with OA; a 10 year follow up of a community-based cohort of 12,000 people to determine the natural history of knee pain and risk factors for incident knee pain; confirmation in a community sample of new morphological risk factors for OA that we have recently identified; exploration of the role of muscle in OA; a community-based clinical trial of over-the-counter medications for knee pain; and therapeutic interventions to modify angiogenesis in animal models of OA.
