About Beginners` Spanish and Russian, BA (Hons) - at University of Nottingham

Offering modules in the literature, culture and history of Spain, Spanish America and Russia, while allowing you to develop your skills in both languages to degree level, this course encourages you to immerse yourself in the diversity of both cultures. Students take part in a special subsidised course in Russian in the first summer vacation and spend the third year abroad.

Year one
In Spanish, you begin a structured course in the language to take you from beginners? to degree level and also are introduced to aspects of Spanish and Spanish American culture, art and history. In Russian, alongside the language, you take modules on Russian history, culture and literature.

Year two
In Spanish, you will develop your knowledge of the language to prepare you for the year abroad, and to deepen and widen your knowledge of aspects of Spanish and Spanish American literature, cinema, culture and history. In Russian, you consolidate your studies in language and culture.

Year three
You will usually spent one semester in Spain or Spanish America on a programme of studies in a higher education institution, as an assistant in a school or on a work placement; the other semester is spent studying in Russia, with further opportunities for travel and volunteer work.

Year four
In Spanish, you will build on your language acquisition in Year three to develop your language skills to degree level, and will select specialist options from a range of research-based topics in the literature, cinema, culture and history of Spain and Spanish America. In Russian, you will apply your language skills in high-level modules, including employment-related ones, and there are options in Serbian-Croatian and Slovene.

By the end of the course
You will have reached a high level of competence in Spanish and Russian, and will have the ability to use both languages in sophisticated contexts. Your time abroad will prove to employers that you are adaptable, independent and able to cope in challenging situations.
