About Local Dental Anaesthesia, Short Course - at University of Portsmouth

Overview
This course is for those with overseas dental qualifications who have been recommended to study local anaesthesia by the GDC.

If you're looking to broaden your dental skills, this Local Dental Anaesthesia short course will help you to specialise in the field.

You'll learn how to safely deliver local anaesthetic to patients, and reflect on working in a primary care environment in the UK. Learning on this course includes clinical activity and the provision of care to patients within the Dental Academy.

As well as providing specialist skills in the application of local anaesthetic in a dental setting, completion of this course will help you to achieve the GDC learning outcomes for registration as a Dental Hygienist in the UK, enabling you to register with the General Dental Council (GDC) and move into employment.

What You'll Experience
On this short course you'll:

  • Develop an awareness of drugs and therapeutics commonly used in medicine and dentistry
  • Get an understanding of the safe practices associated with the provision of oral local anaesthesia
  • Critically reflect on your own practice within the UK healthcare setting
  • Build upon your existing knowledge of local oral anatomy and physiology to ensure safe working practices
  • Our Dental Academy is a training ground for undergraduate King’s College London Dental Institute students as well as you and others on your course. So with dental care professionals and undergraduate dentists under the same roof, you’ll get a feel of what it’s like to be part of a dental team working within a primary dental care setting.
