About Dental, Health and Care Professions, MPhil, PhD, DHealthSci - at University of Portsmouth

Overview - Dental and Oral Health

We're looking at how clinicians work with patients from different demographics to promote oral health and prevent disease. We're also addressing the growing demand for more complex dental treatment and maintenance among an ageing population, by helping to both develop new operative and learning tools for dentistry – such as the use of Teledentistry in dental education. We are also investing in new restorative material development through advanced 3D printing techniques and how these behave in the oral environment.

As a postgraduate research degree student with us, you’ll make your own contribution to our pioneering work, and play your own part in turning our research into impact.

Overview - Health and Social Care

Our School of Health and Social Care delivers research at the highest ethical standard to improve knowledge for services and the health of the community.

Your research could deal with the most urgent health and wellbeing issues facing society – from the need to care for an ageing population, to delivering effective health and social care to under-represented, vulnerable or isolated groups within society. Your research can also be linked to Biomedical Science and Pharmacy, Psychology, and Geography.

As a postgraduate research student, you'll access seminars and tutorials in epidemiology and statistical methods, database management, qualitative research, and development and assessment of quality of life measures.

Support and facilities

When you join us, you'll be supported by our Graduate School, alongside your assigned supervisory team, who'll help you get the most from our facilities. The Graduate School will help you become part of our thriving, collaborative research community, and help grow your skills as a researcher through the Graduate School Development Programme, which offers training, workshops and events.

You'll have access to extensive resources including a Clinical Skills Laboratory, Digital X-Ray Suite, Virtual Environment Radiotherapy Training (VERT) System, and Ultrasound Room. Our Centre for Simulation in Health and Care offers you the opportunity to develop practical skills for working in health-related sciences in a safe learning environment. The Centre has simulation facilities that mirror current clinical equipment and healthcare environments.

What can a postgraduate research degree do for my career?
