Course Overview
The course is exciting, practical and supported by lots of opportunities to explore what applied drama can be, engaging with visiting professional practitioners and partaking in practical projects in the community. Each year strengthens your theoretical knowledge and gives you a chance to try different approaches in a range of professional settings and to specialise in the areas that interest you:
YEAR 1: Modules such as Digital Arts and Play & Creativity will throw you in to a fun, challenging and exciting atmosphere where you develop your core skills and the working methods that you may use in Applied work. You get to explore Applied theory and a range of contemporary practitioners.
YEAR 2: You practice your skills in real-life situations with carefully targeted groups in the community. Our modules Workshop Facilitation Skills and Applied Practices 1 enable you to build strong facilitation skills, run your own workshops and develop creative projects out in the community. Students work in schools, mental health settings, charities or set up their own projects in community spaces.
YEAR 3: This is your time to move towards being an independent practitioner. What kind of practitioner do you want to be? You will be supported by a range of Applied professionals to answer this question, creating your own research and practical projects based on your specialist interests such as Drama Therapy, Prison Theatre or Education. On Applied Performance Practices 2 you will set up and run your own project. Previously students have developed projects in schools supporting a range of different subjects and also collaborated with professional organisations to deliver drama projects for adults and young people in different community settings. Your final project is where you design, organise and deliver a major project of your own choosing, acting as far as possible as a professional in your own right.

Assessment

'The course as a whole changed my perception of Drama as a subject.
The lectures were always innovative. I began to see that the skills I was learning could be used universally and not just for the purposes of teaching Drama.
My projects with mental health groups has helped to shape me both as a person and as a facilitator. The endless persistence and support from lecturers has helped me to see the positives both in myself and my practice.
This has now led me to go on to a 6 week facilitation programme where I will be working alongside young adults to help them overcome obstacles and flourish like my university experience has enabled me to do. I am eternally grateful.'
