About Mental Health, BSc - at University of Wales Trinity Saint David

Course Overview

The BSc Mental Health degree is designed to provide students with comprehensive knowledge and understanding of how and why individuals may develop mental health difficulties. Delivered through a flexible learning pathway including weekend provision, the programme will explore how we can help prevent, reduce and support such individuals in a variety of individual and group settings within the field of mental health.

The programme has also been specifically structured to incorporate strong employability and professional skills throughout the Programme, including a strong focus on small group work and a module offering work placement hours. The programme is structured around a coherent development of theoretical understanding, practical and research skills, and ethical and professional issues pertinent to the field of mental health and wellbeing.

Within a supportive environment students can choose to enrol on the full BSc degree pathway or may wish to enrol on the level four Certificate of Higher Education before considering moving to the Diploma of Higher Education or the full degree.

Key Features

This programme will offer a unique learning experience suitable for a broad range of students, including those wanting to enter a mental health care field with no previous experience and those already working within such a field who wish to further develop their understanding and skills within this area for their own continuing professional development.

Within a supportive environment that encourages the development of academic and professional skills, students can choose to enrol on the full BSc degree pathway or may wish to enrol on the level four Certificate of Higher Education before considering moving to the full degree.

Modules

Coverage in year one will include Academic Skills and an Introduction to Mental Health. Other modules covered include:

  • Mental health in children and young people
  • Understanding old age
  • Stress, coping and resilience
  • Professional skills in mental health

In year two, modules will begin to introduce:

  • Treatment models and approaches
  • Legal, ethics and professional issues in mental health
  • Culture and community
  • Addictions, substance abuse and psychological dependencies
  • Counselling, support and advocacy skills
  • Applied research skills

During year three, students will have the opportunity to engage in a Work-based learning project and conduct their own Independent research project. In addition, further modules will explore:

  • Mental health education
  • Contemporaty issues in mental health
  • Mental health and the ageing population

Professional Accreditations

There is no professional accreditation attached to this course. For students wishing to become qualified health professionals (Doctors, Nurses, Clinical Psychologists etc) there are clearly laid out academic pathways and professional training routes that should be pursued.

The School of Psychology offers programmes accredited by the British Psychological Society for those wishing to pursue careers or postgraduate study in the field of Psychology.

Assessment

Programme assessments have been designed to enable students to demonstrate a range of skills and knowledge, supporting students to develop their academic skills and confidence. Example assessments will include presentations, health promotion leaflets, awareness-raising literature, traditional essays, portfolios, and applied research projects.

The aims of the assessment procedures are clearly intended to support and assess the students' progress.

This programme has a specific focus on developing relevant employability skills and subject-specific knowledge for a broad range of employment and career opportunities within the wide field of health-care service provision.

With the NHS being the largest employer in Wales and the focus of Mental Health on the Welsh and Central Government Agenda, this programme can help not only develop a strong set of employability skills that can help individuals enter a range of mental health-related professions but also provide an attractive opportunity for continuing professional development for those already working within these professional fields.

Entry requirements

Entry Criteria

For 2017 entry (new UCAS tariff for courses starting in September 2017):

  • Typical offers are made for 64 tariff points for the BSc Mental Health programme.

  • The BSc Mental Health is suitable for a broad range of students, including A-level and Access students wishing to go into the sector and also current or previous workers who would either like to formatlise their experience into a qualificiation or progress in their chosen field.

  • Students with relevant experience may not require UCAS points, but will be required to demonstrate relevant experience and the competencies necessary to undertake a higher education degree programme.
