About English Language Teaching (MA/PG Dip), MA, PG Dip - at University of Warwick

Our English Language Teaching (ELT) suite caters for both experienced and new teachers. There are two pathways:

  • The MA in ELT for applicants with at least two years’ professional experience.
  • The MA in ELT (Studies and Methods) for those who are beginning their careers in English language teaching.
  • The MA in ELT (for experienced teachers) is a highly valued professional qualification that equips postgraduates with a rigorous grasp of best practice, research and issues in our field. The programme also allows you to study for a specialist MA in the following areas: English for Specific Purposes and Academic Purposes; English for Young Learners; Teacher Education; Testing and Assessment; and ICT.
If you have little or no teaching experience, the MA in ELT (Studies and Methods) allows you to gain the theoretical and practical skills required to begin or develop your career in English language teaching and associated fields.

Core modules for all specialist pathways are: ELT Methodology (for students with less than two years' teaching experience) or Issues and Research in ELT (for students with two years or more of teaching experience); SLA and Classroom Language Learning; Spoken Interaction; Approaches to Written Discourse, and Research Methodology. In your second term, you’ll also select modules, some optional and some compulsory, relating to your chosen area of specialisation. These include a Professional Practice module.
Our postgraduates have a record of success, with many going on to take up senior roles in schools and universities, teacher training and educational policy making. Many of our postgraduates from the MA in ELT (Studies and Methods) progress to teach English as a foreign language in schools or universities. After gaining some teaching experience, a significant number have gone on to pursue doctoral research. Inexperienced applicants who are particularly interested in ICT are also eligible to take our specialist MA in this field.
