Overview

This professionally-accredited foundation degree course combines work-based and university-based learning opportunities. Its unique structure lets you complete the course in two years, while employed in the industry or gaining work experience.

This course aims to provide you with the key analytical and practical skills and knowledge required to become a chartered civil or structural engineer. Through the course you will gain a full understanding of the key civil engineering disciplines of structures, geotechnics, water engineering, and highway engineering.

You can study the course as a stand-alone qualification, or progress from this to the final year of the BEng (Hons) Civil and Environmental Engineering. By itself, this qualification is on the same level as the pre-existing Higher National Diploma (HND).

Accreditation
FdEng Civil and Environmental Engineering has been accredited against standards set by the Institutions of Civil, Structural, Highway and Highways and Transportation Engineers and endorsed by the Engineering Council and as such graduates from this course fully satisfy the education base for an Engineering Technician (EngTech).

This course is also accredited by Chartered Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors (ICES). Successful completion of this course contributes to the academic requirements for the grade Technical Member.


Career and study progression

Civil engineering can be traditionally broken into several sub-disciplines. Some of the careers our graduates can pursue include surveying, consultancy, government and research.

Funding

Help with funding is available to a range of students, whether you are studying full or part-time, in your home country or overseas.

You may be eligible for a student loan to cover the cost of tuition fees or a maintenance loan to support you during your studies. We also offer a range of scholarships and bursaries to help you. Current scholarships include:

  • Full Time Undergraduate Bursary: a £3,000 award for new undergraduate students.
  • Path to Success Scholarship: a £4,000 award for students on a four-year degree course with a foundation year.

Please note fees are paid for each year of study unless otherwise stated. You will be required to re-enrol and pay fees at the beginning of each academic year. Fees may be subject to government regulations on fee increases. Future inflationary increases will be applied to each subsequent year of the course, subject to government regulations on fee increases.

Entry requirements

112 UCAS tariff points or equivalent qualifications at Level 3 and Level 2 Maths and English.

Students on the Foundation Degree must be in employment, or have access to employment. It may be possible for the University to assist in finding placements. Students will be guided upon application.

This course particularly welcomes applicants with a Progression or Advanced Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment or Engineering, or courses in a related subject area such as National Certificate/Diploma in Construction/Civil Engineering/Engineering.

We also welcome applicants with no formal qualifications. These applications will be considered on an individual basis.

Such applications will clearly be strengthened by formal organisational sponsorship as a demonstration of employer belief and commitment. It is anticipated that some students will have been supported through internal development courses in their workplace.

International students need to meet our English language requirement at either IELTS at 6.0 or above and a minimum of 5.5 for each of the 4 individual components (Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening).
