Overview

The law is an ever-changing, complex field of study, and a career in law is amongst the most challenging and rewarding.

We will prepare you for your career in law by giving you the information, tools, techniques and experience needed to approach legal problems with confidence and knowledge.

This course includes a foundation year, which covers a range of modules to help you develop the knowledge and skills needed to successfully complete our LLB (Hons) Law degree.

Throughout the course there will be opportunities to undertake practical work experience to complement your academic studies and contextualise your learning in a professional environment.

Work placements are an important part of the course, and we will encourage you to obtain legal work experience in various contexts such as:

  • Citizens Advice Bureau
  • Free Representation Unit
  • Student Law Clinic
  • Community Advice Programme (an advice centre linked with the Law School)
  • marshalling with judges
  • shadowing key lawyers.
The course offers a practical learning experience, examples of this include: 
  • much closer interaction with course tutors due to our ongoing commitment and investment in our student-to-staff ratio
  • pre-course support to help prepare you for your studies
  • trips to the European Court of Human Rights, Supreme Court, Old Bailey, Inns of Court, Mooting competitions nd social events such as boat parties
  • student prizes including the Mike Molyneux Bursary, the School of Law and Criminology Bursary Prize, and the Sweet and Maxwell Book Prize
  • events with a host of leading guest speakers, academics, barristers, judges and solicitors raise your commercial awareness how the law operates in the real world.

Career and study progression
This course is recognised by the Bar and the Solicitors Regulation Authority as a qualifying law degree, meaning that graduates can pursue a career as a solicitor or a barrister. 

You may also wish to undertake postgraduate study to specialise in a subject you've already studied, or to explore something new.

Funding

Help with funding is available to a range of students, whether you are studying full or part-time, in your home country or overseas.

You may be eligible for a student loan to cover the cost of tuition fees or a maintenance loan to support you during your studies. Additional funding is available to some types of students, such as those with dependants, disabled students and more. Find out more about applying for student loans and other funding options.

We also offer a range of scholarships and bursaries to help you. Current scholarships include:

  • Full Time Undergraduate Bursary: a £3,000 award for new undergraduate students.
  • Path to Success Scholarship: a £4,000 award for students on a four-year degree course with a foundation year.

Please note fees are paid for each year of study unless otherwise stated. You will be required to re-enrol and pay fees at the beginning of each academic year. Fees may be subject to government regulations on fee increases. Future inflationary increases will be applied to each subsequent year of the course, subject to government regulations on fee increases.

Entry requirements

72 UCAS tariff points normally in a minimum of two subject areas plus Level 2 English and Maths.

We also welcome applicants with no formal qualifications. These applications will be considered on an individual basis taking into account their professional/work/life experiences and their ability to engage with and benefit from the course.

International students need to meet our English language requirement at either IELTS at 6.0 or above and a minimum of 5.5 for each of the 4 individual components (Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening).
