About Music Technology with Performance, BA (Hons) - at University of West London

Course summary

88% of students on our music courses said they 'would recommend their course to others' in the National Student Survey 2016.

OverviewLondon College of Music's music technology courses represent over two decades of development and experience in preparing students for the industry. This course will also provide a solid preparation for a choice of musical careers performing in either classical or jazz fields.
Why choose this course?Music technology is a fast-moving area of the music industry, constantly changing and expanding, requiring professionals with an increasingly broad range of skills. No other institution offers such an enviable range of dedicated and experienced teaching staff, all of whom are industry professionals, with high-quality technical facilities and studios.
This course follows the major/ minor structure, with 12 music technology modules and six specific to music performance, though the music technology and musical disciplines overlap in many of the modules and very few are exclusive to one subject. In the final year, our students are able to focus on a selected area of study through the project module and their choice of assessments in other modules.
Career and study progression
This course provides solid preparation for diverse career choices, including:
  • studio session musician
  • solo artist/orchestra or ensemble member
  • backing musician for touring artists
  • pit musician in theatre and shows
  • composer
  • musical arranger
  • instrument demonstrator/advisor to manufacturers or teaching.

On successful completion of the course you will have the opportunity to study at postgraduate level.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

You will need:

  • 112-128 UCAS tariff points (or equivalent) normally in a minimum of two subject areas including Music or a related subject area
  • GCSE English and Maths (grade A*-C) or Level 2 equivalent.

We also ask for a minimum standard of musical ability. This is currently grade 8 Performance on your stated first instrument (or voice), together with grade 5 Music Theory and equivalent sight-reading.

If you do not hold these grades, but feel you are at the required standard, you may ask to be auditioned instead. The audition is informal and will include a relaxed interview. Overseas applicants can audition remotely by supplying a video of the audition process. Full details of this process are available on request.

Because the course focuses on music technology, you must confirm previous experience with music technology systems. If you haven't studied on a recognised Music Technology course, we will ask you to provide a portfolio consisting of at least two or three tracks on CD, together with a detailed report on how they were recorded and your involvement in the process.

International students need to meet our English language requirement at either IELTS at 6.0 or above and a minimum of 5.5 for each of the 4 individual components (Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening).

In some countries where teaching is in English, we may accept local qualifications. Please visit http://www.uwl.ac.uk/international/your-country to check for local equivalencies.

We offer pre-sessional English language courses if you do not meet these requirements. Find out more about our English Language courses
