Course summary

This is a BSc (Hons) top up, so students enter only at Level 6, or the final year of a BSc.

Overview

The course will give you a comprehensive insight into various aspects of substance use and misuse ranging from:

  • alcohol and drug effects
  • psychopharmacology
  • historical and cultural context of drug use and misuse
  • models of dependence
  • drug and alcohol policies
  • harm-reduction interventions to reduce blood born viruses
  • evidence-based treatment interventions for substance misuse and dual diagnosis (risk assessment and risk management, policies, interventions and current research in dual diagnosis).

Why choose this course?

We aim at bridging the gap between theory, research and practice. The course has a strong applied focus and keeps on-going links with the field. Teaching includes a variety of strategies, including on-line activities, theatre techniques, group discussions and interactive tasks.

A range of guest speakers contribute to the sessions, ranging from researchers, service users and practitioners; most importantly, during the course you will have the opportunity to meet and exchange ideas practitioners working in a variety of sectors.

The overall aim is to offer a course which is current and relevant for practitioners working in contact with clients with substance misuse problems. The modules are designed to bridge the gap between theory and practice, whilst maintaining a high academic standard.

The course is affiliated with the Federation of Drug and Alcohol Services and is mapped against the Drug and Alcohol Occupational Standards.

Career and study progression

This degree will prepare you for a career specialising insubstance misuse preparing you for roles in a variety of sectors, including:

  • mental health services
  • drug treatment services
  • homeless services
  • midwifery
  • youth services.

You may also wish to undertake postgraduate study to specialise in a subject you've already studied, or to explore something new.

Help with funding is available to a range of students, whether you are studying full or part-time, in your home country or overseas.

Please note fees are paid for each year of study unless otherwise stated. You will be required to re-enrol and pay fees at the beginning of each academic year.
