Course summary

Overview

This course has been designed for graduates (from any degree subject background) who would like to become a nurse. The PgDip Adult Nursing degree course at the University of West London offers a rewarding and challenging career, enabling you to make a real difference to people's lives. You will work with adults of all ages, who may have one or more long or short-term physical/mental health conditions. 

These could include: - heart disease - arthritis - dementia - diabetes - cancer - injuries (caused by an accident, for example).
As a student studying adult nursing you will achieve a PgDip in Nursing and become registered as an Adult Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
Funding ArrangementsFees for the September 2017 intake only, will be paid by the Department of Health, with eligible students able to apply for a bursary.
Why choose this course?You will learn how to observe patients and assess their needs. You will develop the knowledge and skills to plan and deliver the most appropriate care for them (underpinned by current research findings) and evaluate the results, in both hospital and out of hospital settings. You will learn how to help people stay independent and maximise their well-being, improving their health outcomes and also care for people as they reach the end of their lives.
Importantly, you'll learn how to communicate with compassion and build relationships with patients, their carers and families, to provide a positive care experience. Your aim will be to improve patients' quality of life and deliver high quality care. You'll need to take lots of factors into account and juggle many priorities to get the best possible outcomes for patients. This will include working effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team, for example with: - Doctors - Physiotherapists - occupational therapists - social workers
This exciting course will also allow you to develop a broad range of skills including, teaching, leadership and management. Finally, you will reflect the values of the NHS Constitution and the 6 Cs:

The aim of this course is to prepare a registered nurse who is able to offer an excellent quality of compassionate care, enhanced leadership, management and holds inter-professional and research skills, in order to influence practice and initiate change.

with many graduates gaining employment in local Trusts/healthcare organisations. Upon successful completion of the PgDip there will be an option to 'top-up' to a Masters Degree post-qualification.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

You must have a first degree 2:2 or above (in any subject), plus two GCSEs including English and Mathematics at grade C or above; or equivalent, evidence of literacy and numeracy at Level 2.

You need to show evidence of recent study in the last five years.

Applicants who meet the entry criteria will be invited to a values based recruitment event which includes; a maths and English test, group discussion and individual interview (with staff from practice, the University and service users).
Applicants are also required to have a satisfactory occupational health check and Disclosure and Barring Service Check (DBS check) and two satisfactory references.

Candidates who are successful at interview will be required to complete a 6000 word portfolio (APL module - Developing Graduate and Transferable Skills). This will include an extended CV, reflecting on five learning outcomes. Candidates must achieve a pass mark of 40% at academic level 6, to be offered a place on the PgDip Nursing course. Guidance on how to complete this independent study module will be provided by the course leader. Candidates are usually given 4 weeks to complete the module.

As well as having the above qualifications or equivalents, you must be classified as a Home/EU student prior to starting the course. All students also need to meet our English language requirement at either IELTS at 7.0 or above,and a minimum of 7 for each of the 4 individual components (Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening).
