MA (Education): Professional Enquiry for Education Professionals is defined by its philosophy which is grounded in a particular form of professionalism, that of research-based teaching. It is a vision of practitioners constructing their own practical theories of the situations that confront them in their daily life and testing them in action.
Entry requirements: An Honours degree from a recognised institution or a professional qualification such as Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
This programme is delivered at: Winchester (or it may be delivered elsewhere in the region by negotiation and where group size permits)
If English is not your first language: IELTS 6.5 (including 6.5 in academic writing) or a TOEFL score of 575 (paper-based) or 232 (computer-based) or equivalent
Programme ContentThe overarching aim of educational research in this programme is to provide practitioners with new possibilities for professional action.
The programme is designed to enhance and deepen pedagogic knowledge of curricular frameworks, students’ learning and aspects of their professional role in their workplace. Students undertake two compulsory modules and choose from a range of optional modules prior to putting together a research plan as preparation for the dissertation.
ModulesCompulsory modules:Professional Education and Development outlines the nature of professional practice and the forms of knowledge that underpin it. It also discusses the ways in which professionals learn and develop their practice.
Professional Enquiry: Methodology, Methods and Planning prepares students for the dissertation by examining how to plan and carry out research and assess the findings.

AssessmentAssessments for each of the optional and compulsory modules are the equivalent of 4,000 words, but might take the form of reflective journals, portfolios, case studies or workplace-based assignments.
DissertationThis is a personal research project in an educational field of the student’s choice. It involves a large amount of independent study with ample support from a tutor. The dissertation is 20,000 words and marks the culmination of the degree.
CareersA Masters degree is increasingly seen as an essential qualification for senior school positions as it demonstrates enhanced professionalism. The programme also develops skills and knowledge for action in the workplace and it can form the basis of a research degree or further training.
