Linguistics is the study of human language or languages. As an academic discipline, linguistics can be classified as a social science, natural science, cognitive science or one of the humanities. The classification will depend on where you choose to study, and the content of your specific course. Most linguistics degrees will cover the science of language and how it has evolved over time. As a linguist, you will be able to analyse languages, looking at all of the elements that make a language what it is.

During a Linguistics degree, you will study a range of topics. Some modules you might study include:

  • Phonology
  • Semantics
  • Typology
  • Analysing Grammar
