About the programme
Education is one of the crucial arenas in which we can work to overcome social inequalities and aim to achieve equal opportunities for everyone. That is why we need experts in the field of special needs education, because they play an important role in the improvement of the quality of education at every level, in global and local communities.
The Master’s programme in Special Needs Education at the University of Oslo is a full-time programme run in English. It combines the Norwegian approach on inclusive education with the global knowledge from different cultural contexts. The programme will provide you with significant knowledge in the various fields of special needs education, with the added benefit of a unique combination of theoretical and empirical knowledge developed in the research environment at the Department of Special Needs Education. In addition, our students get to participate in the scientific research carried out at the Department of Special Needs education.
The teaching is a combination of plenary and small group sessions with a problem-based learning approach. It is a supportive learning environment with relatively small classes where the students and academic staff work closely together.
The students of the Special Needs Education programme are international as well as Norwegian, and they come from different educational fields. Yet they share the same commitment to social inclusion and the passionate care for all people. Study environment
There are numerous student societies, which all University of Oslo students may join.
If you have an interest in writing, you can write for Pedagogisk Profil, which is a student-driven magazine. You can also contribute to the study environment by joining Kjellerutvalget – the organisation responsible for the Faculty's student pub, or you can get involved with the UV – Student Union and be a representative of the students at the faculty.
The Department of Special Needs Education is part of an extended international network, providing students with the opportunity of encountering high-level international scholars and institutions.
Further studies and career opportunities
As a graduate of this programme, you will have the skills to work in an international environment, and the knowledge to operate in the different roles involved in the preparation, management and realisation of intervention, consultation, inclusion, and research.
As a graduate, you are eligible to apply to PhD programmes in Norway and elsewhere.
