The MSc is for individuals without a background in computing who are in full time employment and want to develop their skills in software engineering, taking advantage of the degree apprenticeship scheme.
About this course
You'll use a combination of technical and soft skills during the course. You will also have extensive on-the-job training allowing you to take your career to the next level and become an expert in your field. You do not need to be working in software engineering to qualify for entrance to this programme, but will need to move into a suitable role where you can apply your learning in the workplace.
This course meets the needs of the apprenticeships scheme, and is designed to the Software Engineering Technology Specialism of the Digital Technology Solutions Level 7 integrated degree standard.
All apprenticeships in the School of Computing have been created by the Institute of Coding, a government funded project to help close the digital skills gap. The MSc has also been created in consultation with industry. This ensures you will develop the skills needed to succeed in today’s workplace.
What you'll learn
Six month Capstone project
Supported by an academic supervisor, this six month, work-based project pulls together the skills and knowledge developed over the course of the apprenticeship, and provides a platform for apprentices to bring direct benefits to their organisation.
Your development
This course will enable you to develop your full potential in software engineering. You will learn how to directly apply your new skills in the workplace, whilst being supported by both university academics and mentors in the workplace.
You will maintain a portfolio of your learning throughout this course using an apprenticeship software programme.
Delivery
This course is delivered by the School of Computing. It has no exams and is a mixture of lectures, practicals and online learning. It is taught over a two year period, equivalent to a part-time masters.
Apprenticeship programmes are required to deliver training at least 20% of the time outside the workplace. To satisfy this requirement, this course will include approximately 25 days per year of on-campus learning at the University. Additional teaching will take place online and through meetings with mentors, degree apprenticeship tutors and academics.
Project work
You will undertake a six month project within your workplace at the end of the course. In your project, you will need to apply the skills and knowledge you have learnt on the MSc to your day-to-day work.
Facilities
You will have dedicated computing facilities in the School of Computing. You will have access to the latest tools for system analysis and development. For certain projects, special facilities for networking can be set up.

A 2:2 honours degree, or equivalent, in any subject. Graduates of subjects related to computer science will be considered, but applications will be dealt with on an individual basis because of the potential overlap between the first degree and the modules on the course.
The school of Computing has a strong track record of admitting applicants from a non-standard background, and individuals with strong work experience are encouraged to apply and will be considered on an individual basis.
Applicants should have achieved grade C or above in GCSE Maths and English (or equivalent qualifications). Applicants without English or Maths qualifications can study for them as part of their apprenticeship.
You'll go through a steep learning curve and we can help employers identify potential apprentices who are likely to be successful on this course.
Your skills will be accessed prior to acceptance.
Furloughed staff can start a new apprenticeship programme related to their area of work.
