Our course develops your understanding of financial reporting and management in the context of the international financial environment.

About this course

Our MSc is an accounting and finance-based master’s with a financial analysis focus.

The global financial and business environment is rapidly changing. With increased regulatory supervision it has highlighted the importance of sound financial management and robust reporting. This course has been developed to meet this need.

The course will also provide you with an integration of accounting and finance expertise. This is for the assessment of corporate performance and valuation.

The course is for you if you're a graduate in:

  • accounting
  • finance
  • economics

You'll gain more specialist knowledge of issues related to financial analysis.

It is also suitable for business and non-business graduates with good numeracy levels. It will help to develop financial skills and understanding.

The course also covers many relevant topics for those intending to study for the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) exams.

What you'll learn

This master’s starts with three weeks of intensive training in fundamental accounting knowledge. This is to remedy the knowledge gap for students from different educational backgrounds.

You'll learn to:

  • apply quantitative and qualitative skills to real-world complex scenarios
  • use the analysis results for evidence-based decision-making

Advanced statistical software

Where possible you'll have access to advanced statistical software including:

  • Stata
  • SPSS

You'll analyse individual companies from an external perspective with substantial emphasis placed on:

  • corporate strategy
  • accounting
  • valuation

Financial databases

You'll undertake practical studies of real-world data via DataStream and other industry sources. You'll develop skills in the manipulation of financial and statistical software.

Your development

You'll benefit from our status as a Bloomberg Experiential Learning Partner. Through self-study, you'll complete the Bloomberg Market Concepts certificate. This gives you an interactive introduction to the financial markets.

On completion of this course, you'll be able to show practical skills and the ability to:

  • integrate your accounting and finance knowledge and skills to assess corporate performance and valuation
  • deal with complex issues both systematically and analytically
  • use analytical skills to make sound judgements around investment management
  • analyse quantitative data used for operational decision making
  • critically engage with contemporary debates on financial theory
  • apply, with originality and creativity, the knowledge, skills and understanding gained on the course to complex issues within the finance sector

Entry requirements

A 2:1 honours degree, or an international equivalent. You must also have a good basic level of numeracy equivalent to GCSE or above.

International Students

To study this course you need to meet our Band 6 English Language requirements:

Direct Entry: IELTS 6.5 overall (with a minimum of 6.0 in all sub-skills)

If you have lower English Language scores, you may be accepted onto a pre-sessional English course. 

Our typical English Language requirements are listed as IELTS scores but we also accept a wide range of English Language tests.

Pre-sessional English Course Requirements

  • 6 week Pre-sessional entry: IELTS 6.0 overall (with 6.0 in writing and a minimum of 5.5 in all other sub-skills)    
  • 10 week Pre-sessional entry: IELTS 6.0 overall (with 1 sub-skill at a minimum of 5.0 and 3 sub-skills at a minimum of 5.5, including writing)
