Roman and Greek literature and culture have profoundly influenced English novels, poetry, plays and films.
On this degree, you'll learn about the worlds of ancient Greece and Rome from a variety of perspectives, and uncover their legacy in our culture and the way we think today.
You can also learn a classical language - we offer Greek and Latin from beginners' or advanced level.
We have exceptional facilities to support your studies, including resources in our multi-award-winning Library, the Great North Museum on campus and our dedicated classical collection.

Classical language learning
Classical language learningWe offer highly successful and nationally acclaimed beginners' Language in Action classes for students who wish to learn Greek and/or Latin.
We also offer intermediate and advanced classes for students with previous experience in either language.
Our language classes are not a compulsory part of this degree so will form part of your optional modules at each stage. They allow you to engage in literary study of original Greek and Latin texts from beginners' right up to advanced level.
You will enjoy small class sizes, allowing for a high level of interaction with teaching staff.

As a Joint Honours student, you will divide your time between the School of History, Classics and Archaeology in the recently refurbished Armstrong Building and the School of English Literature, Language and Linguistics in the Percy Building.
