About Education and Disability Studies, BA (Hons) - at Sheffield Hallam University

This course is ideal if you want a career in the public or voluntary sector, where understanding difference and social injustice is important. Disability studies approaches the study of disability from a social and cultural perspective. The disability modules provide opportunities for you to explore the latest developments in disability research and related issues, such as inclusion, within the UK and wider global communities. The education modules give you a good grounding in educational policy and the main aspects of the British educational system. This course challenges you to think critically about society and education. You learn how to reflect critically on your work and do your own research. You also improve your knowledge of education and disability issues through a wide range of sources such as * film * television * advertising * radio * newspapers * magazines. You do work experience each year in settings such as schools, colleges and other education organisations. These include * local education authorities * inclusion centres * national and community initiatives * young offenders' institutions * museums * libraries. This helps you make career choices and prepares you for working life. A range of experience is attractive to prospective employers. During the course you also develop your academic skills, particularly through using computers for finding information and formatting your work.
