About English, BA (Hons) - at Sheffield Hallam University

This course combines literature, linguistics and creative writing to develop your understanding of literature from the perspective of the critic, the writer and the linguist. We encourage you to apply if you want to learn more about historical and contemporary literature understand more about how language works explore your creative side You study literature from the Renaissance period to the present and examine a wide range of genres. These include works from inside and outside the scope of established literature. At the same time you follow core modules in English language. These develop your descriptive linguistic skills, which you can apply to your study of literary language. There are also several other language options in areas such as language and gender, pragmatics and sociolinguistics. Our teaching team includes established, published writers. They help you with your own creative skills and interests and to develop as a writer. You can expand your range of studies by choosing up to five modules from other related courses. There are opportunities for independent study where you suggest a project idea, usually related to an area of work you might pursue after your degree. Work-related activities on the course can include modules in • journalism • editing • publishing • public relations. In the first round of teaching quality assessments, the Higher Education Funding Council for England rated our English teaching as excellent.
