About Photography, BA (Hons) - at Sheffield Hallam University
In today's world it is hard to escape the photographic image. From mobile phone to gallery to billboard - photographs are everywhere. This makes photography one of the most potent, persuasive and at times highly contested types of media. This course recognises photography as a versatile medium with many different identities.
You are encouraged to explore its creative potential by testing the boundaries of current practice. The first year introduces you to basic photographic techniques, theories and practices. You also learn about basic sound and moving image techniques.
In the second year, you learn specialist skills, which include
traditional colour processing
medium and large format operation and processes
advanced black and white printing
further development of digital output
studio lighting skills
During this year, you develop and define your practice through technical and personal projects, one of which you exhibit externally. We emphasise developing your self-motivation.
In your third year, you further develop the skills gained in the previous two, and further define your practice. Throughout the three years you can take part in master classes and specialist workshops. Your studies culminate with an exhibition of your work showcased in a University-wide degree show.
The course is split equally between practice and theory, which allows you to explore the photograph as a means of communication and develop your own creative practice. You learn how to position your photographic practice in the wider context of media culture.
By learning a full range of photographic techniques, theories and approaches, you gain the knowledge to understand how we produce and consume photographic images. This information gives you an invaluable foundation from which to progress your career as a practitioner.
Our academic and technical staff are practitioners in their own field and collectively recognise that photographers often work in a variety of contexts. Our staff provide you with the support you need to develop and understand your own photographic language.
