About Quantity Surveying, BSc (Hons) - at Sheffield Hallam University

This course is part of our built environment programme. You gain the measurement, financial, contractual and managerial knowledge and skills essential for a career in quantity surveying. You develop an active and flexible approach to managing the building process. This includes extensive use of information technology in our computer suites and learning centre. You use specialist software for managing human and physical resources, assessing critical paths and monitoring project costs. You learn through * lectures * seminars * tutorials * practical laboratory classes * workshops * fieldwork * site visits * self-directed project work. We employ visiting lecturers from consultancy companies and large contractors to reinforce the practical nature of the course. In your first year, you study common modules alongside other students in the built environment programme. You spend your third year on a paid work placement in a building organisation or professional practice. You normally return in year four to complete your studies, although some students take up full employment and complete their studies part-time. We have a good reputation built over many years with employers throughout the UK, which ensures a wide variety of work experience placements. These include major construction companies, private practices and local authorities. You can also take an overseas placement. You can start your Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors' Assessment of Professional Competence (APC) during the placement year.
