The aim of the Graphic and Digital Design programme is to provide a practical and theoretical grasp of design as an area of intellectual making, creative visualisation and design thinking through professional practice.
The BA programme lasts three years and the HND programme lasts two years. They both provide the creative skills and knowledge that prepares students for careers in the creative industries.
Our Design programme reflects the changes and developments of creative industries by adopting current technological trends and needs through multidisciplinary design processes and methods. During your studies you will develop excellent communication skills, great creative aesthetics not only in the areas of graphic and digital design but also in other close to your discipline fields, [architecture, fine arts, animation].
The programme offers you interrelated areas of study in typography and graphic design, branding and advertising, fine art and visual communication information and interaction design, photography, data visualisation and moving image. All of these are pursued by uniquely balancing design creativity with contemporary technology. As a student you will explore different media and develop specialist skills in line with your own interests. Studio-based teaching and technical workshops are complemented by contextual and professional studies.
Degree structureYear 1Future Designer: Year 1 of the programme is designed to introduce students to the principles of graphic design, the history of Art and Design and the foundations of Fine Art practice. The courses cover a range of activities but have three essential aims. Firstly to provide a basic level introduction to design principles, techniques and technologies. These include typography, booking making, drawing, photography, design software, date collection and making. Secondly, a series of intellectual briefs designed to introduce students to some of the fundamental matters in the visual communications process. These include problem solving, research, conceptual thinking and idea development. The third aim is to encourage students to develop a unique personal style and focuses on students' abilities and strengths.
Year 2Creative Practitioner: Study in Year 2 focuses on "the creative industries" and most of the courses feature industry-relevant briefs and support the development of advanced skills. The themes explored in Year 2 include design thinking, how the creative industries operate and students learn how to work to a professional standard.
During this year, students also have the opportunity to exhibit their work, gain a thorough understanding of idea development, enhance their visual skills and techniques and gain experience of working with and for a client.
Year 3Individual Professional: The focus of the final year is on becoming the "individual professional" and is largely concerned with allowing students to develop their individual profile through the development of a creative portfolio that best reflects their abilities and professional aspirations. Students are also encouraged to enter the various national design competitions through "Design Challenges" course (D&AD: Design & Art Direction, RSA: Royal Society of Arts, ISTD: International Society of Typographic Designers, etc) alongside a range of creative industry briefs.
