The first intake of students started on the LLBHons Senior Status programme in September 2015 and the senior status programme aimsto build on the success of our well-established LLB Hons Law programme. The senior status programme is a two-year Qualifying Law Degree specificallydesigned for students who already hold an undergraduate degree in another discipline - successfulcompletion of the programme will allow graduates to go on to undertake thefurther training required in order to qualify to practise, in England andWales, as a solicitor or a barrister (please refer to the notes below about thereview of routes into professional qualification into the legal profession).
The programme provides a sound academic educationin law. It combines the acquisition of knowledge of substantive law with the developmentof wider transferable skills. Wherever possible, it seeks to place law in thewider context of social, political, moral and economic issues.
There is a focus on employability throughout theprogramme and the School of Law has good links with a number of employers in London, including law firms, barristers' chambers and financial institutions. Over the yearswe have hosted a number of guest speakers and various opportunities may be availablefor LLB students to apply for selection for placements, internships andmentoring schemes with a variety of employers in the legal and regulatorysectors. There is also the opportunity for LLB students to apply to beselected to undertake pro bono work advising real clients on real legal issuesin our award-winning Legal Advice Centre, under the supervision of qualifiedpractitioners. Some of the employability andextracurricular opportunities open to students on other LLB programmes may notbe available to LLB Hons Senior Status students, due to the two-year duration ofthe senior status programme. The opportunities listed may involve an application process which may include successfully passing a selection process.
The school has a tradition of extracurricularactivities, including a student-run Law Society. LLB students can apply to beselected to join our Innocence Project or our client interviewing or ourmooting team in order to further their skills and experience*. Mooting isarguing a hypothetical case in a court setting. Our LLB Hons Law students werefinalists in the OUP and BPP National Mooting Competition 2014-15.
From time-to-time we update our programmes to reflect changes in knowledge and industry standards, so the programme structure, mode and the courses and course structure can be subject to change from what is listed below. The availability of option courses also varies from year-to-year according to student preference, staff availability and may, for some courses, also depend on a student's academic performance. Until the academic term immediately prior to the academic term in which an option is listed to run, we are not able to guarantee that an option listed will be available. In addition, please note that some courses may only be open to certain students and may also involve an application process which may include successfully passing a selection process to take the course. For these reasons, the structure (i.e. the mode(s), the courses and the course structure) of the programme shown in this information is shown for illustrative purposes only.
