Learning disabilities nurses should promote the health and well-being ofindividuals embracing the principles of inclusion, empowerment and choice.
Our degree offerspre-registration nursing in thespecialist field of learning disabilities.
You will learn how to promote the health and wellbeing of those whooften face a variety of barriers when trying to have their needs addressed. Youwill ensure that their rights are valued and that they are supported as equal citizens.To do this you will need to possess specialist knowledge and skills, includingstrong and effective leadership skills, to ensure these individuals receivehigh quality care.
Learning Disabilities Nursing is taught and assessed in our four, state-of-the-art laboratories. This ensures you develop competence in a safe andprotected environment. Throughout our degree you will train in the safeguardingof children, young people and vulnerable adults.
Work placementWe have excellent links with the National Health Service and other care providers, yourplacements will take place in clinics, health centres, forensic services, assessmentand intervention services, and schools.
You will spend 50% of your time each year in these valuable workplacements where you will be assessed byqualified practitioners. These placements will be in avariety of institutional and community settings which will enable you to fullyunderstand the needs of your patients. As a learning disabilities nurse, you will play a vital role inproviding specialist support and interventions.
Throughout your degree we aim to make you aware of the range of opportunitiesavailable to you as a registered learning disabilities nurse.
We also promote multi-professional and collaborative working, withshared learning between nursing and midwifery students.
RegistrationWe will prepareyou to apply for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) asa registered learning disabilities nurse. The degree will ensure that you haveachieved the outcomes identified in the NMC Standards for Pre-registrationNursing Education (NMC 2010) including the standards for competence and theEssential Skills Clusters and the requirement of Directive 2005/36/EC. Theintellectual, professional, academic and practical competencies that you willacquire are informed by the European Tuning Project 2009, 3.2.
