Caring for children is adelicate yet incredibly rewarding practice that requires specialist qualitiesand skills.
As a children's or paediatric nurse you willbe caring for children and young people up to the age of 18, including childrenwith physical and mental health issues. You will be taught how to work acrosstraditional boundaries within a multi-disciplinary and multi-agency team.
During your time with us youwill gain a firm understanding children's rights. Our degree will give you theknowledge and understanding of complex relationships between the personal,socio-economic and cultural influences that impact upon a child's health andwell-being. Throughout your degree, we willtrain you in the safeguarding of children and young people.
We offer both theory andpractice in a variety of institutional and community settings. Nursingand technological competence will be achieved by applying professionalknowledge, skills, values and attitudes taught by our expert tutors. It isthese values and skills that will help you to empower children, young peopleand their families in making vital health decisions.
Children's nursing skills aretaught and assessed in our four state-of-the-art laboratories. This ensures you developcompetence in a safe, protected environment.
We promote multi-professionaland collaborative working, and offer shared learning between nursing andmidwifery students.
Work placementsWe have excellent links with the National Health Service (NHS) and other care providers,and will arrange your placements in both hospitals and community settings, includingGP practices, withcommunity nurses and health visitors. You will spend 50% of your time each year in thesevaluable work placements. It is here that you will be assessed byqualified practitioners.
RegistrationThroughoutyour degree we prepare you to apply for registration with the Nursingand Midwifery Council (NMC) as registered children's nurses.
Theprogramme will ensure the student has achieved the outcomes identified in theNMC Standards for Pre-registration Nursing Education (NMC 2010) including thestandards for competence and the Essential Skills Clusters and the requirementof Directive 2005/36/EC. The intellectual, professional, academic and practicalcompetencies that you will acquire as a children's nursing graduate areinformed by the European Tuning Project 2009, 3.2.
